Food Manufacturing Execution & Production Planning

16 products listed

Introduction

On a food production line, the questions are practical ones. What should we make this shift, is a machine stopped, and did the batch record get filled in. Manufacturing execution software (MES) sits between the office planning system and the machines. It schedules production orders, captures what was made on the floor, tracks how efficiently lines run and keeps quality and traceability records. Some products plan ahead using material requirements, others focus on live data from machines, and some replace paper batch sheets in small plants. Many are meant to sit beside an ERP system rather than replace it.

Who needs it

Food and beverage factories with production lines, from small makers replacing paper orders to multi-site plants. It becomes worth having when paper batch sheets go missing, when nobody can say why a line lost time, or when scheduling is done on a whiteboard.

What to look for

  • Planning or live machine data. Some products focus on production planning and order scheduling, while others focus on machine data, downtime and OEE (overall equipment effectiveness, a measure of line efficiency). The first suits a planner, the second suits a floor supervisor.

  • Fit alongside your ERP. Several products say they are designed to work with an ERP you already run, and some connect to SAP. Ask whether it replaces or complements your current system.

  • Plant hardware needs. Some products need IoT gateways or edge devices to read machines, one supplier sells its own marking hardware, and some run in a browser on ordinary tablets. Check what must be installed.

  • Food safety records included. Some products include HACCP logs, allergen changeover control and quality checks, and others only handle production. Decide whether one system should hold both.

  • Contract length and pricing basis. Of the 15 profiled products, 10 are quote only, and terms range from none to 36 months. One prices per plant plus a fee per machine.
