Introduction

Before a product reaches the line or the menu, someone has to decide what goes in it, what it costs, what it must say on the label and which suppliers provide each ingredient. Recipe formulation and product lifecycle management (PLM) software holds that information in one controlled place. It works out nutrition as a formula changes, keeps specifications for ingredients and packaging, records allergens and links materials to suppliers. Two kinds of product sit here. Manufacturer tools manage formulas, specifications and supplier data. Kitchen tools manage recipes, plate costs and menus for restaurant and catering groups.

Who needs it

Food and drink manufacturers, private-label brands and supplement makers developing products, and restaurant or catering groups that need consistent recipes with allergen data. It becomes worth having when specifications live in shared drives, when nutrition panels are calculated by hand, or when a formula change means checking many documents.
