Menu Data, Nutrition Data & Food Product Databases

6 products listed

Introduction

Working out the calories in a dish, or which of your products contain an allergen, needs reliable food data. This category supplies it. Some products are databases you search through a website, where suppliers enter product specifications for caterers to look up. Others are application programming interfaces (APIs), which let a developer pull nutrition data straight into an app. A few are full platforms for restaurant chains that calculate nutrition, produce labels and publish menus. One offers market and trend data on what consumers are ordering. You should first decide whether you need to look up data yourself, or whether you need something built into a system.

Who needs it

Caterers and restaurants that must supply allergen or calorie information, chains publishing nutrition on menus, and developers building food apps. It becomes worth paying for when you spend more time checking ingredient sheets than cooking. Rules on menu labelling differ by country, so check what applies to you.

What to look for

  • Website tool or developer API. Erudus and Nutritics are used through a browser. Edamam, Spoonacular and Nutritionix are sold as APIs for developers. Buying the wrong kind wastes time.

  • Where the data comes from. Erudus data is entered by manufacturers, while others draw on databases of branded and restaurant foods. Ask about coverage in your country.

  • Allergen and label output. Nutritics and Syndigo produce labels and menu displays. Pure data APIs give you numbers but leave the formatting to you.

  • Free tier for testing. Of the products with published plans, several such as Spoonacular, FatSecret Platform and Nutritionix offer a free tier or trial. Test coverage against your own menu.

  • Usage limits and annual billing. API plans are capped by calls or users, and Nutritionix bills annually. Check the cap matches your volume.

At a glance

Of the 12 profiled products, six are quote only. Several sell API plans by month with usage caps, and some have a free tier. One is priced per user, and others have monthly or annual terms.
