Introduction

Cameras can now do more than record. Products in this category use them to see what happens in a kitchen or restaurant and turn it into data. There are two main kinds. Video security and loss prevention tools link camera footage to till transactions, so a manager can review voids, refunds and drive-through speed without watching hours of video. Food waste tools use a camera and scale over the bin to identify what is thrown away and its weight, then show waste by ingredient. A few also use cameras to check stock or food on the line. Most of these are sold on quotation, and several rely on the vendor's own equipment.

Who needs it

Multi-site restaurants with loss concerns, drive-through operators watching speed of service, and hotels, caterers and canteens that want to cut food waste. It becomes worth considering when waste or till losses are large enough to justify equipment and a subscription. Check local rules on filming staff and customers.

What to look for

  • Security video or food waste. Envysion, Solink and DTiQ focus on video and transactions. Winnow, LeanPath, Kitro and Orbisk focus on waste. They do different jobs.

  • Works with existing cameras. Solink and Envysion say they run on cameras you already have, whereas the waste tools need their own scale or camera unit at the bin.

  • Hardware rented or bought. Kitro includes scale rental in its plan, while LeanPath sells its trackers. Ask what happens to the equipment if you cancel.

  • Sized for large kitchens. Winnow, Orbisk and LeanPath list hotels, contract caterers and cruise operations as core customers. A single café may find them oversized.

  • Integration with till data. Loss prevention tools are only useful when linked to your POS transactions. Confirm your till is supported.
