Loyalty & Rewards

Introduction

A paper stamp card lives in a wallet and is often forgotten. Loyalty software replaces it with a digital scheme: guests earn points, stamps or cashback, and redeem them for a free coffee, a discount or a tier benefit. The system recognises the guest by phone number, card, app or POS record, so you can see who returns and reward them without staff doing sums. Simple tools do points and stamps. Larger platforms add a branded mobile app, offers, gamification and campaigns to segments of guests. Some run on the till you already use, while others are separate apps guests must download.

Who needs it

Cafes, bakeries, takeaways and restaurants where the same people come back weekly and a small reward could move a visit from occasionally to regularly. It becomes worth setting up when you have a steady flow of regulars and a way to identify them at the till.

What to look for

  • Works with your existing till. Loyalty needs to identify guests at the point of sale. Check the POS systems supported, or whether the vendor supplies its own till or tablet.

  • App required or not. Some schemes need a guest app or a branded app the vendor builds for you. Others use a phone number or a plain card, which lowers the barrier to join.

  • Size of business it suits. Some products are built for chains and require a sales conversation, while others publish a low monthly price for one site.

  • Included messaging and offers. Text, email and push may be part of the plan or sold as credits. Check how many messages are included.

  • Included tablet or extra hardware. A few vendors include a tablet or tap pods in every plan. Others need no extra hardware at all.
